Large Ensembles

Slow Dancing in the Dark for Jazz Ensemble
by Joji arr. by Levi Block

“Slow Dancing in the Dark’ is one of George Miller AKA Joji’s most popular songs. The original song is a very empty electronic ballad that sings about love and sadness. This arrangement of such an iconic song tries to follow the same roadmap, sound, and feel. In this piece many instruments are playing and tossing around parts that were heard in the original song. At times you might be playing the synth, piano, or the melody. This piece still carries the emotions heard on the original track.

Breezin' for Jazz Ensemble
by George Benson arr. by Levi Block

“Breezin’ is a laid back R&B/Soul song by George Benson’s that includes only a rhythm section and a lead guitar with hints of other instruments scattered throughout. This arrangement takes this version and puts it to a full Jazz Ensemble. The piece starts just like the original with held chords then starts grooving right away with the rhythm section leading the way. The piece gives each section a shot at the melody and includes a solo section with optional backgrounds. This piece is a relaxed experience from the beginning and is a great way to experience this genre.

I Heard It Through the Grapevine for Wind Ensemble
by Marvin Gaye arr. by Levi Block

Marvin Gaye’s ‘I Heard It Through The Grapevine’ is one of his most popular songs. The goal of this arrangement is to follow the original songs structure while giving each instrument their ‘’moment.’’ This piece is grooving from the start all they way to the finish and will make you want to tap your toe, sing along, and listen to it one more time.

Small Ensembles

Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da for Brass Quintet
by J. Lennon and P. McCartney arr. by Levi Block

Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da is a song by the English rock band the Beatles from their 1968 double album The Beatles (also known as "the White Album"). When arranging Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da, I wanted to keep the song as recognizable to the original as possible. The piece features multiple instruments trading the melody and other instruments playing key background parts heard in the original song. This piece is a good time and ends as fun as it started.

My Own Worst Enemy for Jazz Combo
by Jeremy and Jay Popoff arr. by Levi Block

‘My Own Worst Enemy’ was a very popular song in the 2000's. This arrangement keeps the original song in mind and tries to capture all the parts in a small Jazz Combo. This piece can expose your group to the many different styles they can play on their instrument. Its not often you hear punk music on traditional jazz instruments!
